2016 will see a number of high profile and impressive projects come to fruition across Dubai. From amusement parks and opera houses to themed hotels and safari parks, the next year is set to be a busy time for the emirate. Here is our rundown of 16 projects coming your way in the next 12 months..
The Dubai Opera House is set to be completed by March next year, according to Emaar’s latest construction update.
The 2,000-seat, multi-format performing arts venue will be centrepiece of The Opera District, the new cultural hub being developed in Downtown Dubai, which will also will feature hotels, a retail plaza, waterfront promenades and recreational spaces situated around design studios, art galleries and other cultural venues intended to create a “vibrant cultural scene”.
According to Emaar, it will open in March.
2. Dubai Frame
Dubai’s Municipality in November confirmed that work on the $43.5 million Dubai Frame project is nearly complete. It was expected to be opened last month but nothing happened. No official opening date has been annoucned yet but we would expect it to be ready for the public in the coming months.
The project, shaped like a window frame, is situated near the Star Gate games and rides area of Zabeel Park.
It will allow panoramic views of Old Dubai and the skyline of New Dubai from each side.
3. Dubai Water Canal
Located alongside Safa Park, the 3km canal will run alongside 4,500 apartments, 44 townhouses, 19 villas, 65,000 square metres of office space, 37,000 square metres of retail, a Sports Centre and a public park.
Work is under way for the Roads and Transport Authority’s ambitious AED2 billion project to create a canal and accompanying retail from Downtown Dubai to Jumeira. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2016.
4. Four Seasons DIFC
Dubai’s second Four Seasons Hotel, located in Dubai International Financial Centre, will welcome its first guests in April this year.
Reservations are already being accepted, Hotelier Middle East reported.
A total of 106 guest rooms and suites feature wood clad walls, hand-tufted custom carpeting and faceted metal pendants. All rooms offer the new fully customisable Four Seasons Bed, a comfortable seating area, private bar and walk-in-closet, while studios and suites also have deep soaking tubs.
5. Dubai Ferris wheel
The world’s largest Ferris wheel is starting to take shape on the $1.6 billion Bluewaters Island development, off the coast of Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence.
The 210 metre-high Dubai-I is being developed on a manmade island by Meeras Holding and will include 48 luxury capsules capable of holding 1,400 visitors and offer views of Dubai’s iconic landmarks such as Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah and Burj Khalifa.
The world’s largest indoor theme park at 1.5 million square feet, the project is being developed by by Ilyas & Mustafa Galadari (IMG) Group and is almost complete.
Located in Dubailand, Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road, the park will consist of four themed-zones including Marvel, Cartoon Network, Lost Valley – Dinosaur Adventure, and IMG Boulevard.
It recently revealed a sneak peak of one of its Marvel-inspired rides, Avenger’s: Battle of Ultron.
7. Dubai Parks and Resorts
The Middle East’s largest multi-themed leisure destination will entail three separate amusement parks – Legoland, Motiongate and Bollywood Parks – and one water park. Stretching over 25 million square feet on Sheikh Zayed Road, the Dubai Parks and Resorts development is said to have cost $2.8 billion (AED 10.5 billion). While the project recorded a $7.8 million (AED29 million) loss in this year’s second quarter, it’s sticking to its 2016 opening date.
8. Dubai Safari
A zoo park, this replacement for Dubai Zoo is set to open this year. In April 2015, the Dubai Municipality announced it was 30 percent complete. The park will cover 119 hectares of land.
9. Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk
Nakheel’s 11km retail and hospitality attraction will transform Palm Jumeirah crescent into a vibrant destination for walking, shopping and dining.
Accessible from 14 points along the existing sidewalk and on the doorstep of an array of world-famous resorts, it will include 30 kiosks offering refreshments and souvenirs. Construction started in 2014 and it is set to open in mid-2016.
10. Nikki Beach Restaurant & Beach Club
Located on the manmade Pearl Jumeirah, it is expected to be unveiled in February, organisers have confirmed. The 52,000 square metre property will comprise of Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, Café Nikki, Key West, Satine by Nikki Beach Restaurant & Lounge, Nikki Spa by ESPA and Tone Fitness Center.
The Nikki Beach Restaurant & Beach Club will open in February 2016, while the rest of the hotel and resort will open later, Meraas Holding said.
11. Dubai Festival City Mall expansion
The $400 million expansion is expected to be completed by June this year, according to a senior mall official.
Brad Merchant, general manager of the mall, said in September the expansion project is about 70 percent complete.
“The expansion will add 20 percent more area to the existing 2.4 million square feet mall and increase the stores’ tally to 420,” Merchant told Khaleej Times.
The investment will also create a 300-metre long waterfront promenade, with 22 restaurants opening by early next year.
“An open air 50,000-square feet platform will be set up on reclaimed land from the marina in the next two months,” he said, which will cost an estimated $8 million.
12. Paramount Hotel & Resorts
Damac Towers by Paramount, which is a cluster of four towers connected by a shared podium consisting of the Paramount Hotel Dubai and three Damac-managed serviced apartments by Damac Maison, is on schedule to open in quarter four of 2016.
13. Viceroy Dubai Palm Jumeirah
“Construction work on our flagship project, Viceroy Dubai Palm Jumeirah, is progressing well, setting it on track for completion in the second half of 2016,” Indian property tycoon Kabir Mulchandani, and owner of developer SKAI Holding told us.
The $1 billion hotel project will include 479 spacious rooms and suites, with 222 signature Viceroy Residences. The beachside property will host ten restaurants, as well as a gourmet market and bakery.
In addition, the hotel will also have a spa, indoor fitness facilities and three outdoor swimming pools.
14. Marina 101 hotel tower
Having failed to meet its targeted opening date in 2015, the Marina 101 tower in Dubai is now expected to complete in 2016.
It is still set to be the second-tallest building in the UAE, with its height of 426.5 metres only surpassed by the world’s title holder, the Burj Khalifa.
The lower portion of the 101-storey tower will house the Middle East’s first Hard Rock Hotel, while the upper levels will accommodate holiday apartments and a restaurant with panoramic views of the city.
15. City Walk Phase 2
This Al Wasl strip is already up and running and the second phase is set to include an additional 10,000 square metres of retail space.
16. Dubai Metro extension
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said in October it hopes to begin work on the Route 2020 metro expansion project in the second half of 2016.
The RTA said in a statement in May that construction of the Red Line from Nakheel Harbour and Tower station to the Expo2020 site would begin in the first quarter of 2016.
However, according to a report in Khaleej Times, the construction start date has been pushed back until the second half of 2016.
The new stations will serve residential areas such as Discovery Gardens, Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estate and the Dubai Investment Park. Passengers should be able to travel from Dubai Marina to the Expo2020 site in 16 minutes, officials claimed.
